Why do you need a private pilot license? A private pilot license is
needed to act as pilot-in-command of an aircraft carrying passengers.
The private pilot license provides you more flexibility and freedom
than the recreational pilot license. Obtaining a private pilot license
will take roughly two months of time when training at a continuous
pace. A private pilot license will cost between $3,000 - $5,000
depending on the length of the training time. The requirements for the private pilot license are a minimum of 40
hours of flight time, 20 hours of flight instruction, and ten hours of
solo flight. These are minimums as required by law. On average, a
private pilot applicant will have between 50 - 60 hours of flight time
before taking the checkride.
Below is a detailed list of the requirements for the Private Pilot
License:
- 17 years of age and be able to read, speak, write, and
understand the English language.
- 40 hours of flight time
- 20 hours of flight training
- 10 hours of solo training
- 5 hours of solo cross-country
- 3 hours of cross-country training
- 3 hours of night flight
- 3 hours of flight by reference to the instruments
- 3 hours of flight training in preparation for the flight
test within 60 days prior to the checkride
- Pass the knowledge test with at least a 70%
- Pass the practical test
