| You have reached the point in your aviation career
where you would like to gain the equivalent of the doctorate. You want to obtain the Airline Transport Pilot License. This
license is required to act as pilot-in-command of an airliner and
reflects your skill and knowledge as a pilot. The Airline Transport
Pilot (ATP) License is the pinnacle of the pilot license structure.
To obtain the ATP license, you will have to demonstrate your
knowledge of the aircraft to a higher standard than any other license.
In addition, you will be held to the highest standards when
demonstrating your flying skill. This license does provide a fair
challenge to obtain, but you will receive a great amount of personal
satisfaction once completed.
The ATP typically requires around ten hours of flight instruction
if you are current on instruments and in the category and class of
aircraft you will be testing in. The ground school portion of the
license is comprised of aeronautical knowledge gained from all
previous ratings and licenses. The average cost of the ATP is roughly
$2,000.
Below is a detailed list of the requirements for the ATP license:
- Be at least 23 years of age and be able to read, speak,
write, and understand the English language
- Be of good moral character
- Hold at least a commercial pilot license with instrument
rating in the appropriate category and class of aircraft
